Colin E. Harvey

BVSc, FRCVS, Dipl. ACVS, Dipl. AVDC, FF-AVDC and ACVS-OMFS

Dr. Colin Harvey (summary of CV) is Emeritus Professor of Surgery and Dentistry having retired from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) in 2013. He graduated from the University of Bristol Veterinary School, United Kingdom in 1966 and then completed an internship and residency in small animal surgery at Penn Vet. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) in 1972 and a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 1988. He narrowed his academic and clinical activities at Penn Vet to the mouth, ear, nose and throat, and from about 1980 onward, to oral and dental areas. Recognizing that veterinary dentistry and oral surgery deserved recognition as a distinct discipline, he created the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service at Penn Vet’s small animal hospital, recruited a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) as a service member to ensure that dental and periodontal scoring in research projects was meticulously conducted, and developed a dentistry and oral surgery residency program. Since the early 1980s, his research projects and clinical investigations have centered on oral and dental conditions, and in particular periodontal disease. His clinical interests and research work led to the formation of the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), which he served as the Director from 1997 to 2019.
